Neuro-Reach Brings Brain Health Education to Clear Lake First Baptist Church

On Sunday, November 10^th 2024; Neuro-Reach joined members of Clear Lake First Baptist Church in Houston for a community workshop focused on memory, aging, and the value of recognizing cognitive changes early. The gathering brought brain-health education into a familiar setting where neighbors could ask questions without first having to navigate a specialty clinic.

Our student volunteers welcomed participants, helped them check in, and shared printed information on common signs of cognitive change and when to seek a medical evaluation. With ipads and iphones ready at the tables, the team offered brief, voluntary cognitive screenings to approximately 47 community members. MoCA, MMSE, and SLUMS screenings were used. Volunteers explained the process, gave participants time to work at their own pace, and treated each conversation with privacy and respect.

The education portion was just as important as the screening. We discussed how occasional forgetfulness differs from changes that disrupt everyday life, why families should bring persistent concerns to a healthcare professional, and how to start that conversation with an older relative. A brief screen can indicate that further evaluation may be useful; it cannot diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or determine the cause of memory difficulties on its own.

The room also made space for connection. Light snacks were available while participants waited or spoke with volunteers, and printed take-home materials gave families a way to continue the conversation after the workshop. The pens, clipboards, and handouts were small details, but they helped make the experience organized and welcoming.

We are grateful to Elizabeth Francis, the church’s business administrator, and the leadership of Clear Lake First Baptist Church for opening their space and helping us connect with the community. Thank you as well to our student volunteers for setting up, welcoming attendees, assisting with screenings, distributing materials, and staying to answer questions and clean up. Most of all, we thank the participants who trusted us with their time and questions.

Neuro-Reach’s goal is to make neurological education accessible beyond hospital walls. This workshop was one step toward a community in which people feel comfortable talking about brain health and know where to turn when a concern arises.
